Most people start dating around 12 or 13 but plenty of adults, about 42% of singles under 40, have never been in a committed relationship.1 2

When you’re young, dating starts with hanging out in groups, sitting beside each other at lunch, and maybe a little hand holding.

As you get older it progresses to one-on-one time, sexual desire, and marriage.

No matter what age you are, going on a first date or getting your first girlfriend is exciting. It teaches you tough lessons about yourself and the world. Choosing the right person can make you better or make your life unnecessarily hard.

If this is your first time or you just want to brush up because it’s been a while, here’s what happens when you get a girlfriend.

You learn her quirks

An exciting part about finding a girlfriend is probably getting to know her on a deeper level. When I met my fiance, who is Portuguese, I enjoyed learning about all the ways she was different from me–a kid from the hood.

You discover her likes, dislikes, and eccentricities. You learn to relate over shared interests and develop interests together. You also have more in-depth conversations and ultimately grow closer. This closeness can improve your heart health and lead to a healthier life overall.3 And it’s true the older you get.

You learn girls aren’t made of sugar and spice

A while back I wrote a post on relationship and dating advice for men because I was disappointed with what was available on the internet. Unless you’re looking to hook up with random chicks, or be what is essentially a dick with a credit card, there isn’t much real-life advice for men looking to grow a healthy relationship.

From high school through college, you can very easily fall into the trap of idolizing women. It might seem that every other woman is the girl of your dreams and she can do no wrong. This is especially true when you don’t have any hands-on experience.

Learn from the mistakes of the men around you. You can’t build a balanced relationship if you are allowing your girl to do whatever she wants regardless of how it makes you feel. When it comes to speaking to you respectfully, lying, cheating, etc, it’s necessary to hold her accountable.

Women are human and humans can be wonderful. But they can also be very cruel. The world of social media tricks you into believing the highlight reel of people’s lives. Similarly, dating apps and online dating, in general, can force relationships into transactional exchanges. You can start believing that the only thing women want is a man with money.

While women are into attractive men (check out how to be an attractive man here), most women are not looking to take advantage of you.

Just be aware of the ones that are.

You gain(or lose) confidence

Relationships trigger the reward response in your brain.4 If you have a good relationship with a loving, supportive partner, you gain confidence and overall happiness. When you have the opposite, however, it’s very easy to slip into low self-esteem and second-guess yourself.

Because you can become addicted to the choices you make, bad relationships can wire your brain into an addiction for unhealthy behavior. Let’s say you have a style of arguing that is rewarded with sex. Or if you’re in high school, your girlfriend uses her emotions to get what she wants. She might ignore your text messages or give you the silent treatment. Then when you do what she wants, she rewards you with love and spending time together.

This sets you up for a lifetime of stress and hunting for relationships that are a self-fulfilling prophecy of your insecurities. The good news is that what your brain trains itself to be addicted to is entirely up to you.

You practice mental toughness

Mental toughness is a measure of your resilience and confidence. In real life, it’s how well you can handle stress and become better because of it. Mental toughness is a requirement for excelling in a career, school, and any sport at a high level.

I took up boxing because I was not emotionally or mentally tough. I drank all the time and complained about how stupid college was to anyone that would listen. Never mind the fact that my best friends at the time only saw me as the drunk guy who worked at Starbucks. Today, I am a former boxer, hold a degree in physics, and have amassed a substantial Twitter following.

I mention Twitter because you have to be mentally tough to thrive on social media.

Relationships make you mentally tough if you let them. You and your new girlfriend are individuals. This means you’re going to face difficulty and conflict and sometimes you both will be right.

The signs of emotional maturity in a relationship are when you can face conflict without it threatening to break up everything you’ve built.

You learn how to argue

The amount you argue depends on your compatibility with your significant other but all relationships face conflict. In fact, you need to overcome conflict if you want to grow.

Arguing doesn’t have to look like screaming and yelling at one another and it doesn’t have to lead to a breakup. But learning to argue or assert your point of view in a healthy way is an essential social skill that is valuable in every facet of life.

Here are other social skills that help you thrive in a relationship:

  • Empathy
  • Active listening
  • Conflict resolution
  • Self-awareness
  • Anger management
  • Assertiveness

You learn that the relationship is more important than the other person

The most important thing to remember is that the relationship is more important than the individual. Valuing the relationship over the individual means that you don’t allow either you or her to do something that puts the relationship in jeopardy. When I learned this, it changed the way I treated women and the quality of my relationships.

You don’t have to be a relationship expert or seek out a dating coach to have a good relationship. In fact, togetherness is hardwired into our DNA. You just have to be willing to keep working on yourself.
