The Best Pre-Workout Coffee Drink For Cardio
The Best Pre-Workout Coffee on the Market
I spent most of my boxing career drinking coffee before training.
I never thought of it as a supplement. It was just another part of my pre-workout routine, like stretching, road work, shadowboxing, or skipping rope.
If I had an early run, a long conditioning session, or several rounds of sparring ahead of me, I wanted something in my system to wake me up before I started. On top of that, I just like the way coffee tastes.
I don’t take my coffee with any syrups, sugars, milk, or cream. Just black coffee.
The problem was that I didn’t really know how much caffeine I was getting. Spoiler alert: it was quite a lot because I drank quite a lot.
It was never just a small cup. In fact, while I was going to school for physics, in the military, and boxing professionally—all at the same time—I could drink a whole French press at 8 pm and still be good to sleep. The problem is that I carried this habit with me into my late 30s and early 40s.
I still train and use my mind heavily through writing and teaching, but I’m not exerting nearly as much energy. But I was consuming a similar amount of coffee. When I tried to stop off, I noticed that I had also grown dependent on coffee for my workouts.
Something had to give, so I tried traditional pre-workouts.
Conventional pre-workout supplements were more precise, but many went too far in the other direction. They combined large stimulant doses with sweet flavors and a long list of ingredients I did not always need. Many of them also contain caffeine.
There are a variety of non-stim pre-workouts, but they are closer to general fitness formulas than to something that gives you that training buzz.
I needed something that helps me get fired up and in the zone, but doesn’t make me feel like I’m a crackhead chasing a fix. .
That is the problem Prism Potion solves.
It is a pre-workout coffee drink with enough stimulation to boost alertness and make training easier, but not so much that every serving makes you feel like a tweaker and keeps you up well past a decent bedtime. It also contains the V02 Peak Performance mushroom blend, MCT powder, ashwagandha, and rhodiola.
After using it before lifting, conditioning, and Zone 2 cardio, I think Prism Potion is the best option on the market for people looking for a coffee pre-workout. It’s better than black coffee but gives less stimulation than a conventional pre-workout, and comes with a whole host of other benefits.
Why Coffee Is a Good Pre-Workout Drink
Coffee has a couple of things going for it that really help with training.
Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors in the brain. Adenosine is one of the signals involved in building sleep pressure and making you feel tired. Blocking that signal does not create new energy, but it can temporarily make you feel less fatigued while simultaneously increasing adrenaline.
Research shows that it can sharpen focus, reduce perceived exertion, and improve several types of workout performance.
The International Society of Sports Nutrition reports small-to-moderate benefits in muscular endurance, movement velocity, strength, sprinting, jumping, and aerobic exercise.
All of this means that coffee can help you feel more prepared to work and make the same effort feel slightly easier.
That is especially useful for morning workouts. Sometimes the hardest part of a 6:00 a.m. session is becoming awake enough to start it with intensity. A cup of Joe can provide the energy boost you need to get out the door and through the warm-up.
Coffee also supplies antioxidants and other naturally occurring compounds. Those may contribute to its broader health effects, but the stimulant does most of the immediate work before exercise.
I’m listing these supplementary benefits of coffee because marketers tend to credit every ingredient in a pre-workout drink with producing instant energy. The other ingredients are useful, but there’s a world of difference between stimulation and energy, and hydration and focus.
What Makes Prism Potion A Good Pre-Workout Coffee Drink
Technically speaking, Prism Potion is not pure black coffee.
One 7.15-gram serving contains:
- 80 mg caffeine
- 2 grams of PeakO2
- Organic arabica coffee
- Organic MCT powder
- Organic coconut milk powder
- Organic ashwagandha
- Organic rhodiola rosea
Despite not being black coffee, Prism Potion contains only 15 calories per serving, primarily from organic coconut milk powder and organic MCT powder.
MCT stands for “medium-chain triglycerides”, a type of fat that the body absorbs and converts into usable energy more quickly than most dietary fats.
Coconut milk naturally contains some MCTs, especially lauric acid, while MCT powder provides a more concentrated source that is typically richer in the faster-metabolized caprylic and capric acids.
Together, the ingredients add a small amount of readily available, sugar-free energy.
They won’t fuel a long workout the way carbohydrates will, but the MCTs make Prism Potion more substantial than ordinary black coffee without turning it into a high-calorie pre-workout drink.
Cardio benefits of the Peak02 mushrooms
Prism Potion contains a mushroom blend called Peak02.
This technically makes Peak02 a mushroom coffee, but it is the only blend of mushroom coffee that I’ve seen formulate itself for performance.
Part of those fitness and performance benefits arise from the MCTs in the organic MCT and organic coconut powder, but many of them come from the Peak02 mushrooms.
PeakO2 is a proprietary blend of six organic mushrooms: cordyceps, reishi, king trumpet, shiitake, lion’s mane, and turkey tail.
The blend is the main reason Prism Potion functions as something more than instant coffee. Human studies have tested PeakO2 or Cordyceps militaris-containing blends for oxygen consumption, time to fatigue, blood lactate, and peak power.
Before an easy session, I can use one serving. Before harder work, two servings raise both the stimulant and PeakO2 amounts. Four grams matches the higher quantity used in some performance research.
Prism Potion has a good dose of caffeine
One serving of Prism Potion contains 80 mg of caffeine. Two servings contain 160 mg.
The standard research range for the training benefits of caffeine is approximately 3–6 milligrams per kilogram of body weight.
The 3–6 mg/kg range helps us understand performance research, but it should not be treated as the minimum effective amount for every person or session. Some people will get the benefits with doses as low as 2 mg/kg. On top of that, very high doses cause more side effects and don’t give you any more benefits.
Your ideal amount depends on body weight, tolerance, habitual intake, training difficulty, time of day, and sensitivity to anxiety or digestive discomfort. The goal isn’t to take in as much as possible, but rather, to find the minimally effective dose.
For someone lighter, one serving of Prism Potion approaches the lower end of the commonly studied dose range. Someone larger will need more.
I personally don’t need a competition-level stimulant for Zone 2 cardio or routine lifting. One serving does more than enough for me in the gym, but I like the taste so much that I usually end up having more than that, so it’s good the caffeine content isn’t too high.
Two servings provide enough pre-workout energy without forcing me into the 300-mg range found in many energy drinks and gym powders.
When Should You Drink Prism Potion?
The conventional recommendation is 30–60 minutes before training. Blood levels typically peak within that general window, although food, dose, genetics, and delivery method can change the timing.
However, I care more about being consistent than hitting a perfect number cooked up in research.
I drink Prism Potion before leaving for the gym, and by the time I arrive, warm up, and begin the difficult work, it has started doing its job.
Coffee vs. Pre-Workout Supplements and Energy Drinks
Ordinary coffee, an energy drink, and a gym-focused pre-workout may all contain caffeine, but they are not interchangeable. While I love a good Red Bull, energy drinks and pre-workout formulas can come with drawbacks.
The biggest is that many contain large doses of caffeine—sometimes combined with additional stimulants. A sensible dose can improve alertness, perceived effort, and athletic performance. But more stimulation does not automatically produce more energy or better results.
Once the dose exceeds what your body tolerates, it can increase heart rate, blood pressure, anxiety, and perceived cardiovascular strain. You may feel intensely stimulated while becoming less capable of controlling your breathing, pacing your effort, and sustaining your performance.
In other words, the product can make you feel more “turned on” while actually reducing the total amount of quality work you can perform.
Many energy drinks are flavored delivery systems. Some include sugar, vitamins, taurine, amino acids, or herbal ingredients. Others promise clean energy with zero calories and a clearly disclosed dose.
There is nothing inherently better about something because it is natural, and there is nothing inherently worse about an energy drink because it comes in a can. Instead, look at the amount of stimulants it contains, what else is included, whether you need those ingredients, how it affects your stomach, and whether it interferes with sleep.

The advantage of a Prism Potion is that it’s an instant coffee mix, which means you’ll add powder to hot water. It also has a lower dose of caffeine per serving than coffee and there is no sweetness, added flavor, or additional stimulating ingredients like energy drinks.
Prism Potion sits between is in a nice middle ground: It feels like a cup of coffee, but its formula makes more sense for training than your standard latte.
Three Ways to Make a Pre Workout Drink Using Prism Potion
1. Mix Prism Potion In A Shake
Blend chilled coffee with one scoop of protein powder, one banana, ice, and water or milk.
If you want to get your a healthy dose of carbohydrates and whey, this is a pretty solid way to take Prism Potion.
This works pretty well as a light meal before a longer session or when your schedule is tight.
2. Mix Prism Potion With Other Pre-Workouts
I like to make a mix of pre-workout supplements, which includes whey protein, Mita Nutra Drive, Mita Nutra boost, and Morning Would.
Since these are all powdered supplements, this is a pretty easy and the concoction makes sure that you’re fueld and energized for your workouts.
3. Drink Prism Potion By Itself
Mix one serving with eight ounces of hot water for a light session. Use two servings before harder work if your tolerance and schedule permit.
This is the version I use because the dose is predictable.
I can adjust it without guessing how strong the café made its latest batch. You can also mix it into a shake, although I prefer it hot. I enjoy the ritual and do not always want a cold energy drink first thing in the morning.
What I Like About Use Prism Potion As A Coffee Pre-Workout Drink
It offers moderate, adjustable stimulation
80 mgs of caffeine per serving is a tame amount. It’s enough to wake you up and, if you want to use it for performance or fitness, you can easily increase how much you mix.
A lot of products that claim to increase your energy like to increase the dosage of stimulants or add more. That can make a product feel stronger, but feeling more does not always mean it’s better for you.
Remember, there is a point of diminishing returns on your nervous system before stimulants start to impair your performance.
However, one serving of Prism Potion raises my energy levels without making my heart feel like it’s break dancing. And two are enough to get a benefit of improved output during my conditioning routine.
It goes beyond regular coffee
Coffee, by itself, supplies caffeine and antioxidants. Prism Potion adds a 2-gram serving of PeakO2 plus MCT powder and adaptogens.
And more importantly, those ingredients are in addiction to the Arabica Coffee that’s part of its blend. So you actually get coffee, just enhanced.
It is easy to use consistently
It dissolves in hot water and fits a habit I already have. If you’re already making coffee in the morning, this is actually even easier. Especially if you have an electric kettle to just fill, press a button, pour and mix.
It does not taste like candy
This might just be a personal preference, but I’m not not a fan of sweetend protein powders or pre-workouts.
Now, I don’t need it to be completely flavorless—I tried that with Naked Whey protein, and I only take that mixed with someonething else—but it can’t be overwhelming or have me questioning whether there’s actually sugar in there.
Prism Potion tastes like coffee with an MCT-and-coconut character.
Coffee purists may not consider it a replacement for freshly ground beans, but the flavor will be familiar to anyone who has used MCTs before. And if you haven’t, it’s not bad at all, but it definitely is different.
It costs less than a café habit
A 30-serving bag only costs $25, or about 83 cents per serving.
Two servings cost approximately $1.67.
That is more than basic beans brewed at home but much less than buying a specialty drink—or even a small coffee at Starbucks or Panera—every morning.
Limitations and Who Should Avoid It
Prism Potion is extremely useful, but it’s not a complete replacement for a gym pre-workout. It is, however, a very nice alternative and it contains one of the only ingredients proven to increase your cardiovascular capacity.
If you want something that has added benefits like hydration or helps with your recovery, you either need to look elsewhere or add it to a stack of other supplements.
It also contains caffeine. Not as much as coffee, but it’s still there.
If you are highly sensitive, pregnant, taking medication that interacts with stimulants, managing a health condition, or training close to bedtime, consult an appropriate healthcare professional.
And this should go without saying, but it seems to be the common practice now to warn people about this, but don’t take this if you are allergic to any ingredients it contains.
Final Verdict
Regular coffee works before training. I used it throughout my boxing career, and the evidence supporting its role as an active stimulant for exercise is strong.
Its weaknesses are an inconsistent stimulant dose and the absence of performance-enhancing ingredients. Conventional formulas solve the consistency problem but often supply more stimulation than I want.
Prism Potion fills the space between them.
One serving gives me 80 mg of caffeine and 2 grams of PeakO2. Two servings give me 160 mg and 4 grams. I can match the amount to the workout, keep a familiar morning ritual, and avoid the candy flavor and extreme stimulation of many alternatives.
It will not replace sleep, carbohydrates, sound nutrition, hydration, or consistent effort. No beverage can do that.
What it can do is make it easier to wake up, focus, and begin the work without making the rest of the day—or that night’s sleep—pay the price.
For that reason, Prism Potion is the best option on the market for not only the way I live, but for the way I train now.
